School information

An EUPROMETA Doctoral School will be held right after the Conference (16 - 17 September 2022) in the same venue. The school is chaired by Costantino De Angelis (University of Brescia) and its topic is:

Non-linear effects in metamaterials and metasurfaces

Conventional optical components control light using gradual phase accumulation through propagation in refractive materials. Recently, ultrathin optical interfaces capable of controlling the light properties, including amplitude - phase - polarization and the dispersion of light, have been proposed for mid-infrared and optical wavelengths. These devices, called metasurfaces, rely on the scattering properties of ultrathin subwavelength-scale optical resonators patterned at interfaces.

The concept of metasurfaces has gained considerable attention in the optics community, offering new perspectives for the realization of optical components with unexpected optical functionalities. The topics of interests are fundamental principles and technological applications targeting new phenomena and advanced optical functionalities. Of particular interest has been the exploitation of metasurface concepts to introduce new nonlinear optical phenomena, that allow overcoming phase matching constraints and efficiency limitations of conventional nonlinear optical devices relying on bulk nonlinearities. Nonlinear metasurfaces have been opening a new paradigm for efficient and ultracompact frequency conversion, light generation and shaping, and other innovative applications.

The school offers a unique opportunity to students and young researchers to meet pioneers and leading experts in light scattering and innovative light manipulation with nonlinear nanostructures and metasurfaces, and get exposure to the latest advancements in this burgeoning research field. Comprehensive lectures will take into account the widespread backgrounds of the audience.
